Our Beach Towel Blorange design is playing with gradients in tone of blue and orange . There is also play with hue saturation. The pattern used on the towel is called a quatrefoil. The center of the quatrefoil is a gradient of blue tones while the outline uses a gradient of orange tones in the opposite direction.
The word quatrefoil translates to ‘four leaves’ and indicates a four leaf design that has a long history! Some records indicate its use in the Mayan culture dating back 700 BCE. It makes a regular appearance in Gothic architecture and during the Renaissance period. This particular quatrefoil is a barbed quatrefoil which may have first appeared in the around 1260 on the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France. The angles indicate thorns between the four petals of the shape. It is an enduring design of symmetry and balance.
